Choose a security camera by how it records. A Wi-Fi IP camera records to a memory card and works on its own, the 3MP bullet and square cameras connect to a UL-tech NVR, the NVR and DVR kits record to a hard drive, and the trail cameras run on batteries or solar. The cameras are from UL-tech.

How to choose a security camera

A single camera for a door, garage or shopfront. The 1080P Wi-Fi IP cameras are plug and play, list two-way audio and customisable motion detection, and record to a TF card of up to 128GB. Their listings say they work on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.

Several angles recorded together. The 8-channel NVR kits pair a 3MP NVR with four, six or eight cameras, and the 4-channel DVR kits come with two or four cameras. The kit listings list HDMI and VGA outputs and viewing on a phone.

Where there is no mains power. The trail cameras use AA batteries, and one has a built-in lithium battery with a solar panel. They shoot 4K video and list infrared night vision.

Before you order, check the camera and the recorder against one another. The 3MP cameras are listed as not suited to NVRs of 1MP or 2MP, and a camera listed as camera-only needs a recorder bought separately.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a hard drive?

The NVR and DVR kits and recorders that carry a storage note say a hard drive is needed to record and is not included. The Wi-Fi IP cameras record to a TF card instead. Check the product page of the one you want.

Can the 3MP bullet and square cameras be used on their own?

No. The bullet camera listing says it cannot work alone and must connect to a UL-tech NVR, and the square camera listing is for the camera only with the NVR sold separately. The 3MP cameras are listed as not suited to NVRs of 1MP or 2MP.

    Which cameras work over Wi-Fi?

The 1080P IP cameras connect over Wi-Fi, and their listings say they support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only. The NVR kits use wireless cameras, and the 4K Wi-Fi trail camera has app control.

    Are the cameras waterproof?

The listings give the bullet cameras IP66 and the square cameras IP65, and the trail cameras IP65 or IP66. One 4-channel DVR kit says its cameras are not for outdoor use, so read the listing for the kit you want.

Is there a camera that does not need mains power?

The trail cameras run on AA batteries, and the solar trail camera has a built-in lithium battery as well. The solar model says Wi-Fi is not available.
