Size the pump to the pool, not to the price. The rule of thumb is that the whole volume should pass through the filter about twice a day, so a 5,000 litre pool needs roughly 400 litres an hour of real flow, and undersized pumps are the usual reason a pool goes cloudy in a heatwave. Cartridge filters are the simplest type to own: rinse the cartridge weekly and replace it every season.

Run the pump during the day rather than overnight. Chlorine is consumed fastest in sunlight, which is exactly when the water needs turning over.
