Cotton towels and robes — bath towels, bath sheets, hand towels, wash towels and bath robes, from J Elliot Home, Kingtex and Caprice.

    Reading GSM

GSM is the weight of the towelling, and it is the number that actually predicts how a towel behaves. 400–500 GSM is light, dries fast and suits a gym bag or a beach. 550–650 GSM is the everyday bathroom weight. 700 GSM and up is hotel-plush, holds far more water, and takes correspondingly longer to dry on the rail — which is a problem in a small unheated bathroom rather than a luxury.

    Towel sizes

A wash towel is a face washer, around 33 x 33cm. A hand towel is roughly 40 x 70cm. A bath towel is about 68 x 137cm, and a bath sheet is the larger one people mean when they say a towel feels generous.

    First wash

New cotton towels shed lint and repel water until the finishing agents wash out. Wash before first use, skip fabric softener entirely, and they will absorb properly from then on.
