    Hot water urns

    Commercial hot water urns in three sizes, for catering, events, community halls, staff rooms and market stalls — anywhere a kettle cannot keep up.     Which size do you need

    Counting a cup as 250 ml, the 10 litre holds roughly 40 cups, the 15 litre about 60 and the 20 litre about 80. Allow more than one cup a head if you are serving tea and coffee across a long morning. An urn keeps water hot rather than reheating instantly, so it is usually better to go a size up than to run dry in the middle of service.

    What all three share

    Overheat protection that shuts the element off if the urn is run dry, an automatic thermostat that holds the water hot without reboiling, a water level indicator so you can see what is left, a removable lid for filling and cleaning, and an indicator light for heating and keep-warm. Each needs a 13 amp outlet.

    One thing worth knowing about the 20 litre: its tap sits higher up the tank to reduce the risk of spills and scalds, which means a small amount of water stays in the bottom and the tank will not drain completely.
