    View as

Perlite and vermiculite growing media: 14 perlite listings in coarse and medium grade from 5L to 100L, and one 10L bag of grade 3 vermiculite. There are no fertilisers or potting mixes on this page.

The listings describe perlite as a light, sterile mineral made from volcanic glass that opens up a potting mix so it drains and aerates. They name seed-starting mixes, rooting cuttings, succulents, orchids and cacti as uses, and the medium perlite listings also mention scattering it over a lawn to improve drainage. The vermiculite listing describes holding moisture in sandy soils and loosening clay soils.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between coarse and medium perlite?

Both listings describe better drainage and aeration. The coarse listings say the angular grains suit free-draining mixes for cacti, succulents and orchids. The medium listings suit seed-starting mixes and rooting cuttings, and can be scattered over a lawn to improve drainage.

    Is the perlite organic?

One 100L coarse listing has the word organic in its title, but every perlite description calls the perlite inorganic. Perlite is a mineral made from volcanic glass. If the word matters for your use, ask us before you order.

    What sizes are there?

    Coarse perlite comes in 5L, 10L, 20L, 50L and 100L. Medium perlite comes in 5L, 10L, 50L and 100L. The vermiculite is a single 10L bag.

What is the vermiculite used for?

The listing says vermiculite helps moisture retention in sandy soils and aeration of clay soils, and can be added to potting mix or used as a mulch in planter boxes and hanging baskets. It is grade 3, with particle sizes listed at 1.4mm to 4mm.

Are there fertilisers or potting mix on this page?

No. Everything on this page is perlite or vermiculite, and you mix it with your own compost, soil or potting mix.
