    TV stands

    Stands that hold a television without drilling into a wall — mobile carts on wheels, floor-standing stands, and table top pedestals that replace the legs a TV came with. Between them they cover screens from 19 to 100 inches, and the strongest of them carries up to 80 kg.

    Which kind do you need

    • A mobile cart if the screen has to move. The two cart models lock their wheels and carry a lower and an upper shelf for a player or a laptop, and one of them has a projector shelf as well. This is the usual choice for classrooms, meeting rooms, training and trade shows.
    • A floor stand if the screen stays put but the wall cannot be drilled, which covers most rentals, brick and glass partitions. Height adjusts on every stand here; the 40 to 75 inch model, for example, sets between 122 and 145 cm.
    • A table top stand if you have a bench, sideboard or desk and only need a base. These bolt to the VESA holes on the back of the screen and several swivel, so a desk or bedroom screen can be turned rather than moved.

    Before you order

    Two numbers decide the fit, and both are on the back of the television rather than in its model name. The first is the VESA pattern — the spacing in millimetres between the four mounting holes. The widest range quoted on this page is 200 x 200 up to 600 x 400. The second is the weight. Screen size alone is not enough: a large modern panel can be lighter than a small older one, so check the weight against the stand rather than assuming the inch rating covers it.
