    They do different jobs

    A protector is thin and keeps liquid and dust out of the mattress. A topper is thick and changes how the bed feels — softer with a pillowtop, firmer and more supportive with memory foam. If the bed is uncomfortable a protector will not help; if the mattress is fine and you want it kept that way, a topper is the wrong purchase.

    Order of layers

    Mattress, then topper, then protector, then the fitted sheet. Putting the protector under the topper leaves the expensive part unprotected, which is the common mistake.

    Sizing

    Both are sized to the mattress, and deep or pillowtop mattresses need the wall height checked — a standard skirt will not stay on.

    A protector is for a bed in use. For a house move or time in storage, a zipped mattress bag goes over the whole mattress instead.
