Kids Toys & Play Sets

Toys are grouped here by what a child does with them. Pretend play sets (kitchens, shops, a workbench, a doctor's case) are mostly from Keezi, which is also the range for the magnetic tiles, sand and water tables, ride-on diggers, play tents and kids' basketball hoop stands. Alongside them are remote control vehicles, projectors, craft kits and card games, plus floor play mats for babies and toddlers. Check the age on each listing: some of the building sets and dance mats here list 14 years and up.

How to choose a toy

Pretend play. The Keezi kitchens list sound, steam and light functions or a sink with running water, and the supermarket, cash register, coffee shop and petrol station sets are for shop and cafe games. The cash register set lists 18 accessories, including a barcode scanner with sound and lights, and the supermarket set lists a trolley and 24 accessories. The workbench is a 54 piece set and the doctor's case lists 16 accessories and a stethoscope.

Building. The Keezi magnetic tiles come as 60, 100 and 120 piece sets with a storage box and list ages 3 and up. The brick-style kits are a different level. The Pirate Island fortress lists 6 and up, the City Villa Castle lists 6 to 12 years, and the Ornithopter and Rover Defender models list 6 to 8 years and carry a small-parts warning. The motorcycle and V8 engine models and the 2-in-1 transforming car list 14 years and above, so they suit teens and adults rather than young children.

Outdoors and active. The Keezi sand and water tables with the boat slide and with the windmill list ages 3 and up and EN71 toy safety certification. The ride-on diggers list a recommended age of 3 and above, and the excavator comes with a safety helmet. The Keezi 5-in-1 basketball hoop stand adjusts from 58 to 95cm for ages 3 to 7, and the 6-in-1 adds a soccer game, ring toss, golf game and a music box. For a wall or a door, the Everfit 38 inch hoop mounts on either. A stomp rocket launcher (1 pump and 6 foam rockets) and a ring toss set with 8 throwing rings suit a backyard.

Remote control, music and dance. The NNEOBA 1:24 RC dump truck lists ages 3 to 8 and charges by USB, while the Keezi off-road truck lists 8 years and up. The Keezi keyboard has 37 keys, a stool and a microphone and lists 3 years and above. Dance mats vary: the Double Dance Pad and the 2-Player Dance Mat list 3 years and up, and the USB mats with 30 to 200 games and songs list 14 years and up.

Bedtime, craft and quiet play. The Rocket Projector comes with three discs of 24 space images, projects up to one metre wide and shuts off by itself after 15 minutes, and the storytelling torch projects 6 stories for ages 3 and above. Colorato craft kits cover jewellery making with glitter paints, charms and beads, and glow-in-the-dark clay, and the card games are Crazy Eight, Hearts, Old Maid and Fish.

For babies and toddlers. The CARLA HOME baby play mats come in 100x150cm, 150x200cm and 200x300cm sizes in grey, pink and white, and the Kitchee foam floor mats are 150x200cm and 200x200cm with 3cm padding. The Keezi climbing blocks are a foam toddler playset.

Frequently asked questions

Which toys here suit a three-year-old?

The Keezi pretend play sets, magnetic tiles and ride-on diggers list ages 3 and up, as do the sand and water tables with a boat slide or a windmill, and the basketball hoop stands list 3 to 7 years. Check the age on each product page, because not every listing states one and the page also holds building kits and dance mats that list 14 years and up.

Are the building sets for young children?

Some are and some are not. The Keezi magnetic tiles list 3 and up, but the brick-style kits list 6 and up, and the motorcycle, V8 engine and transforming car models list 14 years and above. The Ornithopter and Rover Defender carry small-parts warnings.

Do the dance mats need batteries?

It depends on the mat. The Double Dance Pad takes 3 x AA batteries, which are not included. The USB dance mats list no battery requirement and plug in by USB.

Is there something for a baby?

The CARLA HOME baby play mats are made for tummy time and crawling, in three sizes from 100x150cm to 200x300cm. The Kitchee foam floor mats and the Keezi climbing blocks suit toddlers.

Where are the kids' sleeping bags, pillows and bedding?

Kids' sleeping bags are on the camping and hiking sleeping bags page. Kids' pillows, bedding and furniture are in the kids' collection, and costumes and party favours are on the party supplies and costumes page.
