    Blockout or sheer

    They do opposite jobs and many rooms want both on a double track. Blockout stops light and helps with heat, which is why it belongs in a bedroom facing east or west. Sheer keeps daytime privacy while letting light through, and does nothing at night with the lights on inside.

    Measuring

    Measure the track or rod, not the window, and allow for the curtain to extend past the frame at each side. For fullness, the total curtain width wants to be around twice the track width — a pair that only just meets will hang flat and let light in at the sides.
