    Artificial grass accessories

    Laying synthetic turf is mostly a question of holding it down and hiding the joins, and those are two different products: pins and tape. On this page there are two packs of galvanised steel pins, two rolls of self-adhesive joining tape, and one roll of 15 mm artificial grass.

    Turf pegs and pins

    U-shaped pins in galvanised steel, 150 mm long and 3 mm thick, in packs of 100 and 200. Galvanised rather than bare steel because they sit in wet ground for years, and the coating is what resists the corrosion. They go through the turf backing and into the ground, and they are the right answer for a perimeter, for an edge that keeps lifting, and for pinning weed mat down before the turf goes over it.

    Joining tape

    Self-adhesive non-woven tape, 15 cm wide, in a 10 m roll and a 20 m roll. It runs under the seam where two pieces of turf meet, so the join is held from below and there is nothing to see from above. The tape itself is six microns thick, so it adds almost nothing to the height of the seam. It is also how you extend a run — two lengths of turf taped together behave as one piece.

    How much to buy

    Measure the total length of every seam and every edge you intend to fix, and buy tape to that length rather than to the area of the lawn — the two numbers are not related, and it is the seams that fail, not the middle. For pins, the perimeter and the seams are what need holding.

    And the grass itself

    One roll of grass is on this page: a 15 mm pile artificial grass in polyethylene, supplied as two rolls of 50 cm x 2 m, blended from olive and green straight yarn with beige curl for a more natural colour than a single-tone turf.
